What to Do in Ladysmith: What New Homeowners Can Look Forward to This Fall

There’s something special about settling into a new home in the fall. The pace of summer begins to slow, the mornings get cooler, and you start discovering what everyday life in your new community actually looks like. If you’ve recently moved to Ladysmith, or are considering making the move, September is a great time to start exploring everything this small Vancouver Island community has to offer.

Small-Town Living in Ladysmith With Easy Access to Nanaimo

With a population of 8,990 according to the 2021 Census, Ladysmith has the charm of a small town while offering convenient access to some of Vancouver Island’s larger communities.

Located on the east coast of Vancouver Island, Ladysmith is approximately 20 minutes south of Nanaimo and about 70 minutes north of Victoria. Nanaimo Airport is only about 10 minutes away, making travel surprisingly convenient for a community with such a relaxed, small-town feel.

And for homeowners who like to explore beyond the Island, the BC Ferries terminal at Duke Point and the Hullo passenger ferry terminal in Nanaimo are both within easy reach, providing convenient connections to the Lower Mainland.

Things to Do Outdoors in Ladysmith This Fall

If you love getting outside, fall is a beautiful time to explore Ladysmith’s extensive trail network. With more than 26 kilometres of hiking and walking trails throughout the community, there are options for everything from a quick morning stroll to a more challenging weekend hike.

One of the most popular places to start is Holland Creek Trail, a 5.8-kilometre route that winds along both sides of Holland Creek. The trail takes you through a beautiful forested setting with highlights including Crystal Falls and the Colliery Dams. Fall also brings the opportunity to see salmon making their way into Holland Creek to spawn.

Looking for a bit more of a challenge? Heart Lake Loop is approximately 6.4 kilometres and takes about two hours to complete. The climb begins with a steep section, but the views fromthe trail make the effort worthwhile, with vistas overlooking Ladysmith, the Gulf Islands and, on a clear day, Mount Baker.

For a longer adventure, Stocking Lake Trail covers approximately 11.8 kilometres and connects with the Heart Lake Loop. The route offers views toward the Gulf Islands and is a great option for those looking to spend a little more time exploring the forests surrounding Ladysmith.

Not every outdoor adventure needs to be a major hike, either. The Rotary Lookout Trail is a short 1.2-kilometre walk with beautiful views over Ladysmith Harbour and the Gulf Islands, while the one-kilometre Marine Walk follows the waterfront from Transfer Beach toward the Government Wharf.

For new homeowners, having this kind of access to nature right in your community is one of the many perks of living in Ladysmith. When the summer crowds disappear and the leaves begin to change, it’s the perfect excuse to grab your walking shoes, explore a new trail and discover a little more of your new backyard.

Rediscover Downtown Ladysmith

One of the joys of living in Ladysmith is having a downtown that still feels distinctly local.

First Avenue is the heart of the community, with heritage buildings, independent shops, cafés, restaurants and services all within an easy walk.

As the weather cools down, it’s the perfect time to grab a snack at The Wild Poppy (my personal favourite being the risotto cakes), browse the local shops like The Top Drawer Boutique (a good place to get your wife a gift) and take a stroll through our beautiful historic streets.

What’s Happening This Fall in Ladysmith

One of the best parts of moving to a new community is finding your people, and fall in Ladysmith offers plenty of opportunities to get out, meet your neighbours and experience some of the local events that make the community special.

September kicks off with the Ladysmith Makers Market on September 5, running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s a great opportunity to browse locally made goods, support small businesses and discover some of the creative talent found right here in the community.

If you’re looking for an evening out, Travis Bernhardt: Magic! is coming to the Ladysmith Little Theatre on September 11 at 7:30 p.m. The show offers something a little different for a night out and is a great reminder that you don’t always have to head to Nanaimo or Victoria to find entertainment.

And then there’s Ladysmith Oktoberfest on September 19. The fourth annual event will take place at High Street Ball Field from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., featuring local music, food, beers from across Vancouver Island, games, prizes and the always-popular best-dressed and stein-holding competitions. It’s a fun way to embrace the fall season and experience some of Ladysmith’s community spirit.

For someone who has just moved to Ladysmith, these kinds of events can be more than something to put on your calendar. They’re opportunities to get to know local businesses, meet other residents and start building connections in your new hometown.

A Place to Put Down Roots

Perhaps the best part of moving to Ladysmith is that you don’t have to choose between small-town living and accessibility.

You can spend a Saturday morning walking through the forest, grab lunch downtown, head to Nanaimo for the afternoon, or catch a ferry for a weekend away, all while coming home to a community surrounded by the ocean, forests and mountains.

For anyone considering Ladysmith real estate, fall is a wonderful time to discover not just the house you’ve purchased, but the community you’re becoming part of.
